Every case is different, and each involves varying levels of complexity. There are no “cookie cutter” answers at this law office. We give EVERY case our specialized attention, drawn from years of experience as courtroom and settlement negotiators, to maximize the results our clients expect.” ~ Todd A. Walters
At The Walters Law Group, Ltd., the term family law includes a variety of case types such as divorce and allocation of parental rights and responsibilities (formally known as child custody), child & spousal support, parentage and contested child visitation. It also encompasses civil orders of protection, guardianships and adoptions, as well as planning for your family’s future. At our firm we help parents resolve these family law issues, whether it be by agreement or a contested trial. We establish child support and spousal maintenance both at the beginning of a case and with modifications in the future. We draft prenuptial and post nuptial agreements, we litigate domestic violence and orders of protection issues and we are as skilled at negotiating complex settlements as we are at preparing and engaging in extended contested trials in all family law matters.
Among the best divorce & family law lawyers in Chicago
Our firm represents every kind of client including professional athletes, television personalities, executives and politicians, as well as their spouses. Whether you consider yourself of high net worth or a member of the working class, the services we provide our clients are consistent in both quality and approach. Professionalism, discretion and integrity are of paramount importance when unraveling the complexities of asset discovery, property division, business valuation and child custody matters. We meet our clients the old-fashioned way, from referrals by friends, colleagues and other attorneys. In fact, our clientele is comprised almost exclusively from referrals by former clients, other professionals and former litigants whose spouse or partner we previously represented. Though they were on the “other side” of the case, they appreciated our respectful but aggressive approach.
Attorney Todd Walters has earned a reputation as an assertive practitioner in the courtroom, and also as a sympathetic counselor at law who is sensitive to the family law problems people such as you are working through.
Attorneys Todd Walters and Nicole Milovich represent clients through every kind of divorce, through the challenges of child support and those involving spousal maintenance. Many of these cases end in negotiated settlements, while others require contested trials.

There is truth to the phrase “you get what you pay for”.
In the context of a divorce, it is common for us to hear the following questions from prospective clients, all of which are valid and important:
Common Illinois Divorce Questions?
Can my spouse and I use one attorney?
No. Illinois law prohibits one attorney from representing both parties in a divorce case.
Is it okay for me to move out of the house or home?
It is if you don’t have kids. If you have children and want to stay involved in their lives and have any hope of custody or joint custody, it is better to stay in the home. We can help explain more…
If I start seeing a therapist or can my spouse use that against me?
The short answer is NO.
How long does it take to get divorced?
An uncontested divorce can be finalized in as few as ten days, whereas a contested divorce can last many months, if not years. The reasonableness of the parties, and their attorneys, directly affects the length of time cases take, and how much the case ends up costing in legal fees. The more you and your spouse (or your lawyers) are able to communicate on a healthy and productive level, the more money you and your family will be able to preserve for yourselves and your children’s financial needs.
Why should I hire you instead of the other guy, or why not just represent myself?
It is certainly possible for someone to act “Pro-Se” in a divorce. However, there are specific rules and procedures of court that need to be followed. Our laws do NOT allow the Court to treat you differently, or with leniency, in the event you choose to have a fool for a client. Part of our job is to educate you on the law, apply it to the facts of your case and to use our experience to obtain the result you deserve. The other part of our job is to protect you from members of our profession whose job it is to get results for your spouse.
What separates us from our competition is that we are respected by our clientele, the judges and other lawyers… Because we are skilled negotiators and litigators. Because we are persistent when it is beneficial for your family. Because we are patient and compassionate. Because we are aggressive when necessary and because we DO NOT back down from vigorous litigation when our client’s position is supported by the facts and the law. Most importantly, we are honest with our legal advice and we do our very best to ensure that you and your children are protected.
