Fathers in the Chicago area who would like sole custody of their children, but do not think there is a chance of it, will likely be happy to hear about the recent resolution of the child custody matter regarding Deion Sanders. The former professional football player was awarded sole custody of the sons he and his ex-wife had together. He was also awarded conservatorship of the 11 and 13-year-old boys. Custody and conservatorship of Sander’s 9-year-old girl will be shared between him and his ex-wife.
While some couples are able to come to an agreement regarding child custody matters on their own, as this case illustrates this is not always the case. When that happens, the decision will be made by a court. In this case, a jury made the decision after hearing testimony from both sides.
In the state of Illinois, couples who are splitting may find themselves resolving child custody matters in court as well. The first approach however, is to try to handle the matter in less contentious setting. These settings take the form of mediation or collaborative negotiation. While these processes are generally best where children are concerned, litigation can, in certain circumstances, provide the best resolution to a case.
Child custody is not the only divorce related issue Deion Sanders and his ex have had difficulty reaching an agreement on. Other matters pertaining to their children, such as child support and visitation, have yet to be worked out. Accordingly, it is likely that there will be more to come surrounding their divorce.
