What Illinois residents need to know about divorce

Regardless of the particular circumstances, according to a divorce columnist on Huffington Post, going through a divorce can be an emotional process. To successfully navigate the divorce maze, a person should educating themself in order to know what to expect. If the services of an attorney are being obtained, it is important at the initial meeting to ask the right questions.

For example, if children are involved, how will the issue of child custody be handled along with child support? In the eyes of the law, who is entitled to custody and will it be full custody or shared? How will either of these be structured as far as week days, weekends, holidays or special events? Concerning child support, it is important to know what to expect, whether they are the one that will be paying or receiving the support. An attorney will probably want details about family finances, so bringing records with and being prepared to discuss details is an important tip.

One should make sure they have a good understanding of what the divorce is going to cost them before proceeding. Talk about how attorney’s fees will be structured and find out what the procedure will be if any parts of a tentative settlement are contested. Trying to obtain the best estimate of their portion of the divorce costs and preparing for that amount so that it does not come as a surprise later on could mean the difference between saving and losing hard-earned money.

Setting aside the issue of cost for a moment, one should understand exactly how the divorce procedure will work, including a timeline of events to come. Educating themselves as to their responsibilities concerning preparation of court documents is also important. After doing so, they could be much more prepared to face upcoming events.
